Two men have been arrested for allegedly taking Rs 15 lakh from a person after promising to get two students admitted to a reputable college in south Calcutta.
Subrata Chakraborty and Shyamal Poddar were arrested in central Calcutta yesterday.
Nasrul Jamal Chowdhury has mentioned in a complaint that he had paid Rs 15 lakh to the duo to get a relative and an acquaintance admitted to the BCom honours course in the college.
He realised he had been duped when the college published the merit list for the course. The name of neither student figured on the list.
An officer said Chakraborty had confessed to have got at least three students admitted to an English-medium school in the Park Street area.
Chakraborty works in a shoe-manufacturing company, while Poddar is a cameraman working for a production house. “We have seized Rs 3 lakh from the two,” an officer said.
Last year, a woman named Manju Rathi had been arrested on the charge of running an admission racket.
