A 17-year-old girl – who was to write her Higher Secondary exam this year – allegedly committed suicide after being rebuked by her mother for reportedly ignoring “her studies.” According to police, it was around 11.30 am on Thursday that the victim identified as Ankita Haldar (17), a resident of Kedar Chatterjee Road in Behala — was found hanging in her room located on the first floor of her residence. She had used her own Orna to hang herself from the ceiling fan, said police sources.
According to police, her mother Mitali Haldar was not at home when the incident took place. Mitali found her door locked and entered the first floor from the adjoining building and opened the lock of the staircase gate. “She brought down the body of her daughter by cutting the ligature and removed her to Vidyasagar State General Hospital with help of her brother Biswajit Sarkar and other local people. She was declared brought dead by the doctors,” said DC (Behala) Meeraz Khalid.
Initial probe has revealed that she was a candidate of H. S. examination 2017. Her father is physically challenged. “A hot altercation took place between the victim and her mother over the issue of her ongoing preparation for the HS examination. This might have triggered her decision,” said an investigating officer.
“No foul play could be detected as yet. No compliant has been received from any corner. Arrangements are being made to hold the Inquest and postmortem to ascertain exact cause of death,” said Khalid.
